NEW YORK CITY, New York: A Russian woman, Svetlana Dali, 57, has been charged with stowing away on a flight from New York to Paris.
A federal grand jury in Brooklyn indicted her this week, and she faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
Dali was caught aboard a Delta Air Lines flight on November 26, traveling from JFK Airport in New York to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris without a ticket. She was sent back to the U.S. and arrested in early December.
On December 16, after being released on bail with a GPS tracker, she was arrested again in Buffalo. Authorities say she tried to cross into Canada after removing the tracker. Since then, she has been held at the federal Brooklyn Detention Center.
Her lawyer has not commented on the case.
Dali's arrest is part of a series of recent airport security breaches. In other incidents, people hiding in the wheel wells of planes were found dead, and another stowaway was arrested in a separate case. Last week, a passenger opened an emergency door while an aircraft was taxiing in Boston.
Experts are concerned about aviation safety, citing issues like a shortage of air traffic controllers and outdated technology. However, they also note that over three million people fly safely every day, and the last fatal commercial plane crash in the U.S. was in 2009.
